The Beginning
If you've ever shopped at an Albertsons grocery store (or driven by one) you've witnessed a part of Boise's history. Joe Albertson opened the first store called Albertson's Food Store in 1939 on State Street in Boise. After working his way up to district manager for Safeway Stores he wanted to open his own stores. He wasn't interested in opening just any grocery store and promised customers "Idaho's largest and finest food store". He delivered on that promise by building a store that was 8 times as large as the average grocery store at the time and included an in-store bakery, ice cream cones, and magazine racks - one of the first in the country.
Continued Growth
Over the years, Albertson's grew slowly but consistently, even during the WWII years. In the 1950's and 60's Albertson's expanded into Utah, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Wyoming. In the 1960's they got into the California market by acquiring Greater All American Markets based in Los Angeles. Continued growth and acquisitions have made Albertsons Companies one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States. Albertsons operates in 35 states under 19 well-known company names, or banners.

Giving Back
Albertsons Companies Foundation
Operating one of the most successful food and drug retailers in the U.S. is only part of the Albertson's story. The Albertsons Companies Foundation is dedicated to bettering the lives of people in our neighborhoods. With programs covering Youth and Education, Health & Human Services, Hunger, Veterans, the Environment, Health and Wellness, Nutrition, Quality of Life, and Diversity and Inclusion of All Abilities, the foundation is dedicated to giving back to the community.
J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation
Apart from the Albertsons Companies, Joe and Kathryn (Joe's wife) established the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation in 1966 as a way to administer their own charitable giving. Joe and Kathryn focused their giving primarily on education and since it was formed the Foundation has given more than $600 million to communities and education systems in Idaho. The Foundation also gives generously to other Idaho charities in the areas where Joe and Kathryn lived and worked.
Some of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundations awareness initiatives today include Buck to Quo, a campaign created to help teens prosper in high school and beyond, and Don’t Fail Idaho, a public awareness campaign to drive continuous improvement in Idaho's education system.
Another Boise icon with the Albertson's name is Albertsons Stadium where Boise State Broncos Football plays its home games on the iconic blue turf. We'll cover more of that topic in another post.
Whether it's groceries, community involvement, or sports, Albertsons and Joe Albertson has had a major impact on Boise.
