Establishing Residency when getting an Idaho Driver’s License

One of the most nerve-racking things about moving to a new state can be proving that you are now a resident of that state. This is especially true if you are visiting the DMV and suddenly find that you don’t have the proper identification and are turned away after waiting seemingly forever to speak with someone. This scenario can put a damper on the whole process. I find that it’s always better to have too much identification than not enough.

Proof of residency can be shown with the following documents:

  • Utility bills
  • Rental agreements
  • School enrollment cards
  • Other documents with your Idaho residence address

Idaho Transportation Department’s website (Fact Sheet > What do I need to bring with me)

Your home address cannot be any of the following:

  • Your workplace
  • Part-time residence
  • P.O. Box, mail drop, or general delivery
  • Vacation residence

Basically, if you have rented a place to live or bought a home, you should have some form of documentation that will suffice – at least within the first few weeks. As I said, I like to be over-prepared and I think I brought 5 different documents that I thought would work. I only needed one.

If you’re bored and would like some light reading then you can check out Idaho Statute IC 49-119(12) for the definition of “resident” in Idaho.

    Regions of Idaho

I remember watching the news during our first month and wondering where all these places were that they’d mention. 6 On Your Side gives regional weather forecasts and I had no clue where the hell the Magic Valley was, or what cities were included in the west central region. I didn’t even know that the…

I remember rolling into town and feeling like I was totally out of my element. I didn’t know anything about B-Town and all of the sudden, I was craving connection. I was comfortable in my small Utah bubble. I had friends and family, I had a great job, I knew where the closest grocery store…
